BRITISH AIRWAYS TO GROUND MOST OF ITS A380s
Inside information from staff at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) today (Wednesday 18 March, 1300 GMT) is that the airport is IMMINENTLY to be put into virtual shut-down, with one of its two runways to be closed and used only for ground operations.
Terminals 2 and 4 will be completely closed to the public, leaving Terminals 3 and 5 operating at a reduced capacity. Terminal 1 closed in 2015. Terminal 5 is the British Airways terminal, and the airline is very soon to announce the grounding of most of its fleet of A380s at the airport. LHR is British Airways' primary hub, and Virgin Atlantic's primary operating centre.
With IAG, owner of British Airways, announcing earlier this week that it was slashing April capacity by 75%, and the relentless spread of the coronavirus in the UK and worldwide, it is no surprise that LHR, the UK's main airport and the world's fifth busiest airport with 80 million passenger movements annually, is to be closed.
